Certified Data-Bearing Device Process

Chromebook Data Destruction and Accountability

Chromebooks are processed through a documented workflow covering receipt, verification, unlock attempts, sanitization, and destruction when required.

Especially relevant for K-12 districts, universities, and organizations with high-volume Chromebook turnover.

Covered Device Types

  • Managed Chromebooks
  • Student-issued Chromebooks
  • Fleet return units

Verified Process Flow

  1. Each Chromebook shipment is received and reconciled to pickup documentation.
  2. Units are verified and evaluated for account lock and firmware lock status.
  3. Unlockable devices are sanitized according to approved procedures.
  4. Locked devices that cannot be sanitized are destroyed as scrap.
  5. Reporting is issued for compliance, insurance, and internal governance needs.

Why Locked Devices Still Create Risk

  • A locked Chromebook can still represent unresolved data risk.
  • Uncertified processors may move locked assets into opaque channels.
  • Without reporting, there is no defensible proof of data outcome.

Required Outcome

If a Chromebook cannot be unlocked and wiped, certified destruction is the only acceptable disposition path.
